For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 small onion grated
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion thinly sliced
  • 8 oz cremini or white button mushrooms sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Meatballs:

  • In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, mustard, egg, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  • Shape the mixture into 1.5-inch meatballs.

Cook the Meatballs:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat with a tablespoon of olive oil.
  • Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  • Make the Gravy:In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the onions and mushrooms, cooking until softened and lightly browned, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute.
  • Sprinkle in the flour, stirring to coat the vegetables. Cook for 2 minutes.
  • Gradually add the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps. Mix in Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, mustard, and ketchup. Bring to a simmer.

Combine and Simmer:

  • Return the meatballs to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
  • Lower the heat, cover, and let simmer for 10-15 minutes, until the meatballs are fully cooked and the gravy thickens.

Serve:

  • Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and serve with your choice of mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
